Suzuki Jimny

Suzuki Jimny update

There’s a lot of confusion and rumour regarding the Suzuki Jimny at the moment. So here’s a summary of what’s happening with the Jimny, which we’ll update as and when new information is available.

Since its new generation launch, the Suzuki Jimny has been a favourite among diehard fans of the small-but-mighty offroader and newcomers alike. Sadly, this has lead to a demand that well exceeded Suzuki’s expectations. This combined with the continued pressure from new emissions legislation has made navigating the Jimny market an increasing challenge. And with the latest news making the future of the Jimny in the UK seem even more unclear, we’ve put together this quick guide to the Jimny situation as it stands.

Is the Suzuki Jimny still available in the UK?

While the answer to that question is yes, Suzuki has stated that this will be in “very limited numbers throughout 2020”, and the focus will be on fulfilling existing orders. Dealerships, including T W White & Sons, have closed waiting lists for any additional units that might be available once the order bank has been fulfilled due to the extremely small supply.

Why is availability so limited?

New legislation introduced in 2020 targets car manufacturers on the CO2 emissions of all cars sold, with a target average of 95g/km per car. Unfortunately, the Jimny’s lowest CO2 emissions comes in at 154g/km. And for every gram over their target, Suzuki is fined. As such, they’ve been forced to restrict the number of Jimny’s sold in the EU and UK.

Will it be available in 2021?

No word from Suzuki on the fate of the Jimny beyond 2020, which has led many to speculate that its days may be numbered. However, there are also rumours that it could be brought back in a different form, one not subject to the harsh CO2 targets – a commercial vehicle. However, if the Suzuki Jimny were to return as a CV, it would be with some pretty big changes, including removing the back seats. And none of this talk surrounding a commercial vehicle version of the Jimny has come from Suzuki themselves.

What are the alternatives in the Suzuki range?

So where do you go from here, if you can’t wait to see what the future has in store for the Jimny? Well, luckily Suzuki has some great alternatives that capture the ruggedness of the Jimny.
