The Suzuki Swift Sport has done it again – for the second year in a row the sporty Japanese supermini has been voted the ‘Best Buy’ hot hatchback by What Car? magazine.
The latest award comes in a long line of plaudits for the Suzuki Swift Sport – and when you drill down into the details, it’s not hard to see why.
Any sporting hatchback has to have a good engine, and the Suzuki Swift Sport doesn’t disappoint here.
There’s a 136hp 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine that’s hungry to be revved lurking under the bonnet. Sending its power to the front wheels via a sweet six-speed manual gearbox, it’s the perfect combination, in fact.
It’s also quick – properly quick. The 0-62mph sprint is dispatched in just 8.7 seconds, with a rasping soundtrack from the honest engine to accompany the acceleration.
Despite its startling turn of speed, the Swift Sport can also play the efficiency card. Be gentle with the throttle and the little 1.6 petrol motor will return a claimed 44.1mpg combined with 147g/km CO2.
Compared to the Renaultsport Twingo’s 40.4mpg combined with 165g/km CO2 and the Fiat 500 Abarth’s 43.5mpg with 155g/km CO2, the Suzuki Swift Sport shows it’s a winner yet again.
And with the addition of a five-door model to the range, it’s now more practical than ever.
It’s safe, too. The experts at Euro NCAP awarded the Suzuki Swift Sport a full five-star crash safety score, rating the Swift’s adult occupant protection at an amazing 94%.
At £13,999 for the three-door car and £14,999 for the five-door model, it’s represents superb value for money, too.
And that’s including Bluetooth, seven airbags, automatic climate control, cruise control, privacy glass, voice activated control, 17-inch alloy wheels and iPod compatibility.
You can even opt for a DAB digital radio and satellite navigation as extra features.
What Car? editor in chief Chas Hallett on the Suzuki Swift Sport’s success:
“The Suzuki Swift Sport might be based on an average small car, but this version’s rev-happy engine and sharp handling means it’s far from an average hot hatch.
“What will delight most is the body control and grip on offer, the Swift outshines more expensive rivals, giving you plenty of confidence to wring out the engine through a series of bends. The three-door will be enough for most buyers and we think it’s still the best affordable hot hatch you can buy.”
