Suzuki Jimny challenge completed (c) Suzuki

Friday Focus: Suzuki SUVs – new and old

As part of our Friday Focus this week, we’re looking at Suzuki‘s SUVs – new and old, and we’ve got some great news to bring you, too.

Remember the amazing Suzuki Jimny challenge we brought you, outlining the efforts five retired Jimny fans were making for charity in a 28,000-mile round-the-world trek?

Well, they’ve done it, without a hitch.

With a journey that far across the toughest terrain Earth has to throw at you is bound to throw up a few car issues, but it was nothing the Suzuki Jimny and its crew couldn’t handle, proving the little Japanese 4×4’s amazing reliability – apart from routine maintenance, a shock absorber bolt was all that needed replacing. Amazing.

In aid of Save the Children and Oakhaven Hospice in Lymington, Leslie Carvall and his fellow explorers made their way through 16 countries and three continents on the epic voyage, exhaustively testing man and machine. It got us thinking though, the Suzuki Jimny is the firm’s longest serving model, originally released back in 1968. Along the way its been tweaked and updated to cope with modern motoring, but what’s next for Suzuki and its SUVs?

The firm has recently released the amazingly capable new Suzuki SX4 S-Cross crossover to great acclaim, bringing the firm’s 4x4s firmly into the modern era – and with the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show just around the corner, it’ll be showing a new concept off-roader.

Called the Suzuki iV-4 concept, it’s a chunky-looking, squat compact crossover that will preview the future design direction for Suzuki SUVs of the future – and if even the teaser shots are anything to go by, it’ll look magnificent.

Could an eventual production version of the Suzuki iV-4 concept replace the current Suzuki Grand Vitara? Don’t rule it out.

What it will do is add even more technology to the range, proving Suzuki is a forward thinking brand that’s serious about its off-road cars, as well as team the firm’s customary reliability with legendary value for money.

Don’t bet against the Suzuki Jimny that’s recently completed the epic trek to join the Suzuki iV-4 concept on stage either, meaning Suzuki SUVs – new and old (although we prefer to think of it as an off-road legend here at T W White & Sons) – will stand side-by-side at Frankfurt 2013.

IN the here and now, however, why not take a test drive in the brilliant new-for-2013 Suzuki Jimny  – offering excellent value for money, unwavering reliability and go-anywhere capability.

If you like your Suzuki SUVs – new and old with a bit more of an on-road focus, come and try out the new Suzuki SX4 S-Cross this weekend, too – experience its intelligent four-wheel drive system, offering the best of both worlds in terms of efficiency and grip, and experience the huge levels of practicality – this is a brilliantly family friendly vehicle.
