Mazda MX5 eyes up world record

The Mazda MX5 is aiming to set a world record, for the largest parade of Mazda cars ever.

Called ‘IMAX-5 2013’ – to be staged in Lelystad, Holland on 15th June 2013 – a line of the famous Japanese two-seater sports car is aiming to shatter the existing record of 459 MX5s.

The previous feat entered the book of Guiness World Records in 2010, but the upcoming could potentially double the previous total. As many as 800 Mazda MX5s will turn up at the event, following a 15km route through the Dutch countryside to enter the history books.

Alongside the hopefully extensive selection of MX5s on show, Mazda will also be showcasing its new range of Skyactiv models available to test drive, including the Mazda CX5 crossover and Mazda 6 Saloon and Estate variants.

Mazda fans will also be able to put themselves in the hot seat with different race simulators, testing their wits behind the wheel. If you’d rather leave it to the professionals though, there’ll also be on track demonstrations, with drivers from the Ribank Mazda MaX5 Cup doing their thing.

For fans of Mazda’s history, Van Herck Racing’s three-rotor-engined Mazda 3 20B will also be strutting its stuff, and no doubt deafening crowds with its unique engine note.

To round off the event, there’ll be a film shown at Europe’s largest drive-in cinema.

So, if you’re an MX5 owner and thinking of making the trip to become part of history, follow this link to register – it’ll only cost you €30 for two people, and you’ll get a hot meal and two drinks per person thrown in, too.

To top it off, you’ll even get a free inspection for your own vehicle.
