Friday Focus: Mazda 6 now 104g/km CO2

Thought the all-new Mazda 6 couldn’t get any more efficient? Think again. The Japanese firm has re-engineered its 150hp 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine already to bring its efficiency up and squash its CO2 output.

The engine will now return over 5mpg more on average, going from the already impressive 67.3mph to an astonishing 72.4mpg combined.

The story is the same with CO2 – the emissions are now down to 104g/km from 108g/km. You still pay the same £20 per year road tax, but the gain in fuel economy (mpg and CO2 are linked) is most welcome.

Best of all, there’s no difference in price, so you really are getting something for nothing here. In fact, you could say less (CO2) is more (mpg).

Opt for the Mazda 6 Tourer and the relative gains are even more important. While fuel economy rises 3.1mpg on average – from 64.2mpg to 67.3mpg – CO2 emissions are squashed by a whopping 5% given there’s no decreased in power or torque.

This means emitting just 110g/km (down from its former total of 116g/km) to Mazda 6 Tourer 2.2 Skyactiv-D 150 enters the same tax bracket as the saloon, reducing your annual car tax bill and providing owners with a useful saving.

And as if the Mazda wasn’t already the class leader when it came to efficiency, there’s no doubting it now, as Mazda UK sale director Peter Allibon explains:

“The improvements to emissions and economy open clear water between us and the sector’s best seller the BMW 320d and when linked with our outstanding finance offers make the new Mazda6 a very competitive choice for our retail customers.”

The increase in efficiency has resulted from “production modifications”, according to Mazda, which we imagine centre around reducing the internal friction and drivetrain loses throughout the engine and gearbox.

Less friction means an engine doesn’t have to work as hard to turn at the same speed, meaning it can burn less fuel and emit less CO2.

With no loss of performance (still 150hp, remember) the car’s impressive 9.0-second 0-62mph time remains, as does range pricing – the 150hp turbodiesel Mazda 6 still starts at an incredibly affordable £21,995.

With some amazing in-car entertainment features on offer and the same great full five-star Euro NCAP crash safety rating, there’s never been a better time to enter into Mazda 6 ownership.

So… why not come and sample the car for yourself this weekend. Drop into our Mazda showrooms at Bookham, Surrey or Orpington, Kent to take a Mazda 6 for a test drive – alternatively, to book your slot in advance contact our sales team on 0844 539 6753.
