It’s an exciting time ahead for T W White & Sons as Mazda’s all-new Mazda 3 hatchback will hit our Bookham, Surrey and Orpington, Kent showrooms very shortly as part of the new car’s tour of UK Mazda dealerships – this means we get to show you exactly how good it is.
If you’re thinking of heading down to sample the new Mazda 3 soon, here’s a handy stats and info guide on what to keep an eye out for when looking around the car, and when on your test drive.
Mazda’s Skyactiv approach to building its new range of vehicles – including the award-winning Mazda CX5 crossover and Mazda 6 saloon and estate variants – is an all-encompassing package that offers buyers amazing performance, dynamic ability, efficiency, safety, space and practicality and style. So what better place to start?
As we’ve already had chance to sample in our first drive review, the Mazda 3 is available with a range of four engines, comprising three petrols and one turbodiesel.
Debuting at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the range opens with a 100hp 1.5-litre petrol, giving solid and peppy performance, while the 2.0-litre unit is available in two different guises: a 120hp motor and a more powerful 165hp engine.
Mazda’s decision to focus on improving engine efficiency without going down the downsized turbocharging route is impressive, too, and it means excellent throttle response and no lack of performance when you need it most.
If you’re looking for something that’ll easily eat the motorway miles then it’s the diesel that could be for you. 2.2-litres in capacity and producing 150hp, it pulls like a train, meaning it makes a very relaxed cruiser.
Efficiency is strong across the range, as you’d expect from Mazda’s Skyactiv tech.
Even the smallest petrol will return 56.4mpg with 118g/km CO2 – seriously ahead of its competition – while the larger 2.0-litre unit returns efficiency of 55.3mpg combined with 119g/km CO2, nearly matching the smaller 1.5.
Opt for the more powerful 165hp engine and that stands at 48.7mpg with 135g/km CO2 – still an incredible result and helped by Mazda’s i-ELOOP regenerative braking system.
The diesel boasts the world’s lowest compression ratio proving how advanced the Skyactiv philosophy is, helping it to return a frankly ridiculous 72.4mpg with 104g/km CO2.
All engines already meet the new Euro 6 emissions standards, making the new Mazda 3 future-proof, too.
Skyactiv technology appears in the new Mazda 3’s chassis, too. High-strength and ultra-high-strength steel is used making the car very strong and very safe in an accident – but with a suite of the latest electronic driver aids, we’re hopeful you’ll never have to experience Skyactiv safety in action.
That steel construction also means the car is very light. As we’ve seen, this helps efficiency, but it means amazing dynamic performance, too.
There’s lots of grip to exploit in the new Mazda 3 and a rewarding and engaging chassis to engage with. This might be a brilliantly practical car, but Mazda’s engineers know that this doesn’t mean it has to be boring to drive.
But even back in the real world, Skyactiv will help families. The new chassis means the cabin is even roomier than before, with excellent levels of leg space in the rear and easy entry and exit.
The boot has been enlarged over its predecessor, too, making the new Mazda 3 even more practical. There’s 364 litres of luggage space on offer, putting it on a par with its rivals, while a 100mm wider boot opening makes loading awkward items a doddle.
As with the Mazda 3’s performance and handling, we know you can mix practicality with excitement – and that extends to style, too. Why should cars have to look dull?
The new 3 certainly doesn’t, thanks to Mazda’s Kodo – Soul of Motion design language. This is a sharply formed head-turner that will certainly attract plenty of attention.
And inside it’s as comfortable and refined as many cars in the premium saloon segment, not to mention the level of equipment on offer.
But that’s something you’ll have to experience for yourself. So why not check out the new Mazda 3 at T W White & Sons soon? To book an appointment contact our sales team on 0844 539 6753.
