The Mazda MX5 has been named the UK’s most popular convertible at the 2012 Honest John Awards.
Mazda’s MX5 beat a wide range of strong competition to top honours in the category, including the BMW 3 Series Convertible and Z4, the Fiat 500C and the Volkswagen Eos.
Consumer-focused website Honest John described the MX5 as “a great sports car” and praised its involving handling, easy driving experience and low running costs.
Managing Director of Mazda UK, Jeremy Thomson: “This award confirms that the Mazda MX5 remains a resounding hit among the British public.
“In spite of a growing number of competitors in this sector, the consistent level of praise for the Mazda MX5 – from journalists and motorists alike – marks it out as the ideal all-year-round convertible.”
With the recent spate of good weather and the summer season fast approaching, there’s never been a better time to buy a convertible, and with the MX5 adding another accolade to its already lengthy list of achievements, it’s the open-top vehicle of choice for the UK buyer.
The Mazda MX5 is available in both soft-top and folding metal hard-top Roadster Coupé guise.
A choice of either a 126bhp 1.8-litre engine or a 160bhp 2.0-litre Sport Tech unit is available – both powerplants provide excellent performance, with the 1.8 taking 9.9 seconds to complete the 0-62mph sprint. The 2.0 completes the dash from rest to 62mph in just 7.6 seconds.
Efficiency is strong, too – the 1.8 returns 39.8mpg combined with 167g/km CO2 emissions, while the larger 2.0 unit returns an average of 36.2mpg with CO2 emissions of 181g/km. This means road tax of £195 and £215 respectively.
Standard equipment on the Mazda MX5 is comprehensive, with the 2.0 Sport Tech receiving Bluetooth, 17-inch alloy wheels, heated leather seats and a premium BOSE sound system fitted as standard.
Prices start from £17,995 for the 1.8 open car, rising to £21,495 for the 2.0-litre soft-top. The Roadster Coupé starts at £19,995 for the 1.8-litre vehicle, while the range-topping 2.0 with Mazda’s PowerShift automatic gearbox costs £23,595.
