Mazda CX5 wins ‘Best Crossover’ award

The Mazda CX5 has been crowned ‘Best Crossover’ in the 2012 Auto Express New Car Awards. The CX5 beat off competition from the Kia Sportage, Nissan Qashqai, Peugeot 3008, Skoda Yeti and VW Tiguan to take top honours in the class.

As the first Mazda to feature the Japanese firm’s full range of innovative fuel-saving SKYACTIV technologies, the judges were impressed with the Mazda CX5’s ability to deliver excellent performance while returning best-in-class fuel economy and CO2 emissions.

Auto Express editor in chief Steve Fowler: “The Mazda CX5 has set a new benchmark for crossovers combining space, quality and style with a great drive and incredible efficiency.

“It’s rare that you can get all that in one affordable package that won’t cost the earth to run – this is a car that can make you smile and keep you smiling.”

The 18-strong model line-up is available with a choice of petrol and diesel engines – as well as two- and four-wheel drive options – starting from £21,395.

The 175bhp 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine will rush the Mazda CX5 from rest to 62mph in 8.8 seconds yet return fuel economy and CO2 emissions of 54.3mpg combined and 136g/km respectively.

The lower-powered 150hp 2.2-litre diesel engine betters those figures, returning 61.4mpg combined with 126g/km CO2, meaning £100 road tax.

The Mazda beats all its rivals on CO2 emissions, and in comparison to the Nissan Qashqai+2, to match the Mazda CX5’s best fuel economy (60.1mpg combined for the Nissan) you only get a 130bhp 1.6-litre diesel engine.

With a choice of SE-L, SE-L NAV, Sport and Sport NAV specifications to choose from, there’s a strong level of standard-fit equipment and build quality on offer.

The entry-level SE-L grade features 17-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth, a 5.8-inch colour infotainment display, cruise and climate control and automatic headlights and wipers among its lengthy list of standard-fit equipment. NAV models also get satellite navigation by TomTom.

Mazda’s autonomous Smart City Brake support system – helping it achieve a full five-star Euro NCAP safety rating – also comes fitted as standard on all models, avoiding or mitigating the impacts of a collision.

The new Mazda CX5 is now available in T W White’s Mazda showroom in Bookham, Surrey and Orpington, Kent – drop them a line to stay updated with the latest news.
