AutoExpress review of top 4×4 SUVs on the market crowns Hyundai Santa Fe as the winner
Technological advancements, especially in terms of engine efficiency, have resulted in a long standing love affair for SUVs and 4x4s. These commanding vehicles have numerous advantages such as an elevated ride height and versatile practicality. Plus, with recent falling fuel prices as well as improved engine efficiency, are fairly cheap to run as well.
Historically, SUVs and 4X4s used to be the rural man’s car, but nowadays these cars are seen all around town and deep into our city centres, where the toughest terrain they are likely to encounter are the steep slopes of a multi-storey carpark ramp, or the depths of a pothole at the side of the road. They’re not just about towing power.
Getting a vehicle with four-wheel drive will result in better performance where more grip is required. However, in snow you’ll still need to get some winter tyres on, though – 4x4s may have more grip on the move, but that doesn’t mean they can stop on a dime as well.
And they’re not always hugely expensive either. While the Range Rover Sport might start at a mere £61,250, the Dacia Duster can be yours for a sixth of the price, starting from just £9,495.00.
Picking the right 4×4 can be a minefield, so our friends at AutoExpress lined up 10 of their favourite 4X4s and SUVs to rank them all according to a range of factors, such as price, equipment, value for money, reliability and practicality.
Their results, hardly surprising. The Hyundai Santa Fe came out head and shoulders above the others. AutoExpress praised the Santa Fe for its attractive design and high quality interior.
It was described as a practical family car, and the intelligent 4WD system commended for making the car feel more secure in slippery conditions. The Hill descent control was also commented on for helping to keep things in check, while the 4WD lock highlighted for boosting its off-road ability.
